Section B — Special educational needs

Does the plan clearly describe all of your child’s special educational needs?

• Check it reflects what you see at home and school.
• Compare it with recent professional reports and advice.
• Look for missing needs, outdated details or wording that is too vague.
• Check your child’s views and strengths have been considered.

Section F — Special educational provision

Can you tell exactly what support your child should receive?

• Check there is support for each need described in Section B.
• Look for clear details: what support, who provides it, how often, for how long and in what setting.
• Flag phrases such as “access to”, “as needed” or “regular” if they leave the support unclear.
• Check that any specialist approaches, equipment or staff expertise are described where needed.

Section I — Placement

Does the named school or setting match the plan and your child’s needs?

• Check the school or setting is named correctly.
• Consider whether it can deliver the support described in Section F.
• If no placement is named, check that this is explained and note any questions you need answered.

A few practical checks

• Check your child’s name, date of birth and other details are correct.
• Read the whole plan, including outcomes and health or care sections, and note anything missing or inconsistent.
• Keep a copy of the draft, reports and your notes. Mark the page or section for each suggested change.
• Write down your questions and check the letter or email from the local authority for the response deadline and how to reply.
